Extensive consultation with a wide range of stakeholders has led to the selection of six ecosystem research sites located across the country for the Expanded Freshwater and Terrestrial Environmental Observation Network (EFTEON), a large research infrastructure that is being developed under the South African Research Infrastructure Roadmap (SARIR) programme of the Department of Science and Innovation. EFTEON is hosted by the South African Environment Observation Network (SAEON), a national facility of the National Research Foundation (NRF) (see th full press release here: https://www.nrf.ac.za/media-room/news/crucial-milestone-ecosystems-research-south-africa).
ASSET Research was involved in the development of 3 of the proposals that was submitted. These proposal were successful, and ASSET Research will be actively involved in the Maputuland and Drakensberg sites.
